Course content

This wonderful adventure takes place in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, journeying and camping along the Wye, through wildlife packed and glorious wooded valleys.  During the weekend we will introduce you to the joys of open canoe expedition, wild campcraft and bushcraft.  The evening will be spent around the campfire you create in your own wild campsite. We will be carrying all our provisions with us, in the spirit of the voyageurs who transported their provisions and their trade goods across the Canadian wilderness.

Over the 2 days, we will be paddling tandem open canoes (if you would like to bring your own boat and paddle solo, do feel free). During the first day we will look at how to paddle efficiently, covering more distance for less energy, and how to control the boat effectively.  For those that are interested there may be the opportunity for BCU star award assessment over the course of the weekend.

When not on the river, you will be learning bushcraft skills to enable you to create your own comfortable wild campsite home.  Some of the subjects we will be introducing over the weekend include:-

  • Fire;
  • Shelter
  • Water
  • Nature awareness
  • Tree and plant identification

Prerequisites

This weekend is aimed at adults who are interested in learning about bushcraft and canoeing. You need not be an experienced paddler, but you will need to be physically fit enough to paddle for most of the day, with short breaks in between, whilst carrying all your own kit in your boat.  You must also be capable of swimming a minimum of 20m in outdoor clothing.

What we will provide

Canoe (2 people per boat); Paddle; Buoyancy aid, and Barrel (these are not 100% waterproof, you will still need a dry bag).

We also have a limited number of hammock/tarp/bivi systems for hire for a nominal £5 charge if you would like to spend the night under the stars.  Please enquire about availability before booking if you are dependent on this for your overnight shelter.  Reservations can be made directly with Wild Connections and we will send you a reservation form on request - full payment will be necessary to ensure your reservation.

Parking is provided at the owner’s risk as well as return to your vehicle at the end of the trip.

Hot and cold water will be available throughout the weekend.

What you will need to bring
