BUSHCRAFT BIRTHDAY ADVENTURE
Deep
in the woodland at our
Moreton in Marsh site, the
birthday group arrived
amidst a beautiful carpet of
spring flowers, excited at
the prospect of the
adventures ahead. How
would this excitable group
survive in the woodland?
Extremely well with the help
of their bushcraft guide!
With
bushcraft and nature
activities broken up by a
slap up lunch of campfire
sausage hot dogs and
birthday cake, all senses
were well and truly
satisfied!
"Duncan
was the perfect host for our
son's birthday party,
keeping a group of eleven
year olds educated and
entertained for a full day.
Activities were well
balanced and the pace was
just right to keep them
engaged and interested
without overloading them
with information. There was
a good mix of individual,
group and team tasks which
ensured even the quieter
lads got stuck in and found
it really rewarding. Basic
survival techniques were
covered including
shelter construction, tracking
and fire lighting together
with a nature walk at the
end to round off a perfect
day. We would thoroughly
recommend it for a birthday
party with a difference."

"MAROONED ON AN ISLAND" BIRTHDAY PARTY
We organised a “Marooned on
an Island” birthday party
for a 7 year old birthday
boy and his mixed group of 6 & 7
year old friends. The girls
had just as much fun as the
boys building natural
shelters and learning all
about knots helping to build
a man made shelter. We
then had them finding their
water supply using a compass
and then a GPS, with
everyone picking up the
basic skills of both
amazingly quickly.
A “Show & Seek”
nature game taught them
about the trees and plants
in their surroundings,
followed a stalking/tracking
game to further increase
their nature awareness and
teach them about being quiet
and careful to enjoy
watching wildlife.
Every Robinson Crusoe needs
to keep warm, dry his
clothes and cook his food,
so we gave them a fire by
friction demonstration with
a strong emphasis on “safety
and “the dangers of fire”.
This was the science part,
with everyone learning about
friction!
Now their quest for their
basic needs was complete,
their three hour adventure
was followed by hot dogs and
birthday cake (provided by
the parents).
The card we received from the birthday boy himself will give you an idea of how much fun was had by all.

BESPOKE BUSHCRAFT & NATURE
AWARENESS - YOUTH GROUP

When we
first met Mohammed, one of
the many dedicated
volunteers at the Friendship
Cafe, it was to arrange a
tailor made activity for his
son to enhance his home
tuition with some hands on
bushcraft (fire lighting in
this case, for which read
chemistry and physics).
The work done by the
Friendship Cafe is
fantastic, bringing together
different nationalities and
generally supporting the
youth of Gloucestershire.
Their work encourages the
kids and young adults to
achieve to the best of their
abilities and to look
forward to a positive future
in a strong community.
Mrs Wild Connections was
particularly pleased as
Gloucester is her old
stomping ground and she had
experienced first hand some
of the problems in the past
of living in the city.
Things, it seems, have
changed for the better
thanks to this wonderful
group of volunteers.
Our
meeting with Mohammed led to
a request to run a bushcraft
and nature awareness day for
the Friendship Cafe's Boy's
Group at Abbey Home Farm,
Cirencester. We
designed the activities to
foster co-operation as well
as sneaking in lots of
education too.
"Duncan
was a very good instructor.
He explained everything
clearly."
What was the best thing
about the day?
"Everything!"
What else would you
like to have done or done
more of?
"Everything, especially the
tracking and nature walks,
knots and cooking food."
"I
think the best thing about
the day was the woodland
walk. I learnt a lot
about the trees and I
found this really
interesting."
"I loved everything
very much."
"I would
love to go again and spend
more time there and next
time I would take my brother,
when he's old enough.
I've told him all about it
and he really wants to go."
"The
best bits were fire making
and animal tracking. I
also loved shelter
building."

BESPOKE BUSHCRAFT
- YOUTH GROUP
We organised a bespoke 3 hour bushcraft session for Woodcraft Folk in Stroud, introducing the kids to the bushcraft fundamentals of fire, water and shelter. Woodcraft Folk were formed based on the writings of Ernest Thompson Seton - for more information please see details of how to buy a copy of his Woodcraft and Indian Lore book in the Book and DVD department of our shop.
“We all really enjoyed the session which was informative and interesting and has inspired us to concentrate on more bushcraft activities next term. We'd like to develop the shelter idea maybe at our next camp."
"The 3 hrs went too fast we could easily have stayed in the woods all day"
